Lesson 3:

Recife: General information

Recife is noticeable for the beauty of its bridges and the Boa Viagem beach. But it has so much more to offer.

Recife was founded by the Portuguese in 1537, and after the Dutch invasion in 1630, became the headquarters of the Dutch government in Brazil.

Since then, Maurício de Nassau engaged in countless urbanisation projects in Recife and brought many artists to the city, such as Frans Post and Albert Eckhout, both pioneers in Brazilian landscapes’ visual documentation and the daily life of its inhabitants.

The Dutch’s expulsion took place in the Battle of Guararapes in 1648 and 1649, but Recife continued to be the stage of important libertarian conflicts. In 1817, dissatisfied with the Portuguese domination, landowners, priests, traders, graduates and militaries took part in the Revolution of Pernambuco.

Today, these brave people turn the capital of Pernambuco into an intense city.

Cultural vibrancy, gastronomic centre, nightlife, beaches, shopping. Recife today is pure excitement.

Infrastructure for tourism

Recife is a combination of seas, rivers and bridges with a history of multiple influences from the Portuguese, Africans, French, and Jewish peoples, represented in many monuments.

Extraordinary sights include the Brennand Sculpture Park, the Golden Chapel, the Museum of Northeast Man, the Gilberto Freyre Foundation, Casa da Cultura and the Instituto Ricardo Brennand (museum).

There are many other attractions including boat trips along the Capibaribe river, trekking in the Botanical Gardens, wreck-diving, dancing to the beat of Carnival and enjoying a wealth of different musical styles and folklore shows in a variety of locations. Here, you can find literature circles at Boa Vista Market, squares designed by Burle Marx, the Poetry Route and even a fantastic sunset at Casa de Banhos Restaurant.

Enjoy the exciting nightlife with local bands, singing waiters and trendy night clubs, and a wide range of cultural and religious festivities, exhibitions, fairs, shows and plays. We are sure Recife will pleasantly surprise you!
