Lesson 18:
North Coast: General information
Land of calm waters and historical buildings.
Beaches of the north coast of Pernambuco are very sought after by those who just want to relax in the sun and savour the rich local cuisine on seafood. Day tours are very welcome in this region, and if possible, do book more time to enjoy it!
Itamaracá Island
Divided from the continent only by the Santa Cruz Channel, the island offers the possibility of taking a bath in the quiet waters and taste delicious local cuisine right next to a secular building: Orange Fort, built by the Dutch in 1631.
Extremely near this "postcard" is the Preservation Centre of the Marine Manatee, an opportunity to know more about these huge and docile animals. Itamaracá still reserves surprises such as a trail to Vila Velha – the antique village, the first steam mill in Brazil, and water sports activities.
Igarassu
Historical and well preserved, the historical centre of Igarassu is declared part of the National Institute for Historical and Artistic Heritage – IPHAN. Emphasis on the Cosme e Damião Church (1535), the oldest one in Brazil.
Coroa do Avião
Located in Igarassu, where the waters of the Timbo River and Santa Cruz Channel encounters with the Atlantic Ocean, this islet was named one of the seven wonders of Pernambuco. Combining an exuberant landscape with a good structure, this piece of land lives up to the title. Ideal for relaxing and snaking, it also serves as a basis for migratory bird research. Boats and yachts that take to the Coroa do Avião leave from the beach of Forte Orange.
Paulista
Not far from Recife, the city has 14 kilometres of coastline, with delicious ways to relax and enjoy the wind. Paulista also keeps buildings of historical value.
Maria Farinha Beach
At Maria Farinha Beach lies several nautical leisure options, including boating and catamarans by lush landscapes, such as mangroves and calm seas. Still account for resorts, hostels and great choices of bars and restaurants.
Infrastructure for tourism
An excellent option for a day tour, the region also offers a few lodging establishments, simple but delicious restaurants and all the facilities for a comfortable stay.
Typical Cuisine
The North Coast cuisine is marked by the flavours and sensations extracted from its waters, such as fishes, crabs, shrimps, and oysters.
