Lesson 5:
Maceió
The capital city of Alagoas State
Maceió offers 40 kilometres of beaches with transparent water, hinting at turquoise and pale green, filled with natural pools, golden sand and vast stretches of green made up of mangroves and sugar cane farms.
The urban beaches are just as pretty as the remote ones. It’s here in the Capital where the majority of hotels are concentrated.
Pajuçara is the departure point for traditional fishing boats that go to the city’s most visited natural aquarium.
Jatiúca is one of the most famous beaches in the State. It is worth a stroll along the shore where there are stalls, deck-chairs to rent, a bicycle path, and even popular street vendors making pancakes from cassava roots.
Culture
Far from the seashore, spread across Maceió’s centre, are three cultural attractions. These churches with different architectural styles, ranging from Gothic to Baroque, guard some wonderful artworks which are popular in the Northeast. There is also a historic neighbourhood, Jaraguá, which was formally the old bohemian district. Here you will find buildings from the 19 century, mansions and warehouses.
Cuisine
The Capital’s gastronomic hub is Jatiúca, the first beach to appear in tourist guides for the region. Today, all along the shore, you will find restaurants and kiosks that offer a great variety of dishes and snacks. The region’s speciality is seafood from the lakes and rivers. Still, dishes with French, Japanese and even Peruvian flavours fill the tables, meaning that there is something for everybody!
Airport
Maceió’s main airport is called Aeroporto Internacional Zumbi dos Palmares and it is 25 kilometres from the city centre.
Distance from other cities:
Recife: 266 kilometres; Aracaju: 283 kilometres; Salvador: 604 kilometres; Brasília: 1,973 kilometres; Rio de Janeiro: 2,135 kilometres; São Paulo: 2,444 kilometres.
