Lençóis Maranhenses

Lençóis Maranhenses are an amazing series of sand dunes that stretch across 10 kilometres of the coast of Maranhão and 30 kilometres inland. It is truly a surreal and unique landscape to behold.

Between May and August, the seasonal rainfall creates lakes of clear blue and green, transparent water dotted across the dunes.

You can reach the national park from Santo Amaro city, which is to the West of the park or by Barreirinhas, which is 25 kilometres from São Luis to the East of the park.

From Barreirinhas, you can visit numerous permanent and temporary lakes from inside the park or from the little port where you can catch a boat along the Preguiças River to the seaside town of Caburé.

From Barreirinhas, you can also journey from the Delta of the Parnaíba River, which crosses the State of Piauí, before arriving at Jericoacoara in Ceará.
