Lesson 10:

Ceará State

Located just above Ecuador, the State boasts 570 kilometres of beaches, forest, waterfalls, trails, caves, prehistoric cave paintings and colossal monoliths (huge groups of rocks) waiting to be explored.

On the coast of Jericoacoara, in the far north, to Canoa Quebrada in the south, there are beaches with dunes, colourful sand and extensive stretches of green mangroves.

Geopark Araripe, in the south of Ceara, covers an area of approximately 3,441 kilometres. This space is situated in a region characterised by its important geological record of the Cretaceous period, renowned for its paleontological content ranging between 150 and 90 million years, which is exceptionally well preserved and reveals an enormous paleontological diversity.

The State’s main airport is in the Capital and has flights to all major Brazilian cities as well as diverse international flights.

The state borders with: The Atlantic Ocean (N and NE), Pernambuco (S); Piauí (W); Rio Grande do Norte and Paraiba (E)

Total area: 14,634,830 square kilometres

Population: 9 million (2020)

Main beaches in the destination:

Canoa Quebrada, Cumbuco, Mundaú, Aquiraz, Flecheiras, Jericoacoara; Chapada do Araripe; Serra do Baturité; Juazeiro do Norte.
