Lesson 13:
Maranhão State
Maranhão is located in a transition zone between the Northeastern inland and the Amazon. For this reason, it offers the opportunity to experience different ecosystems, which are sometimes compared to the nature found in Pantanal in Mato Grosso, a national park in the central-west of Brazil.
It has 640 kilometres of tropical beaches, Amazon rainforest, bushland, mangroves, a delta in open sea and the only desert in the world with thousands of crystalline lakes. This diversity is organised in 5 main tourist areas, each of which has its natural, cultural and architectural attractions.
