Lesson 8:

Salvador

The capital city of Bahia State

Culture

Salvador is known as the "cultural capital of the country" because it is the birthplace of many important Brazilian creative figureheads celebrated nationally and internationally. The city is investing increasingly in tourism and recognises it as an important activity for the arts, cultural and historical heritage.

Area of great architectural value, the Historic Centre takes you back to the beginning of Brazil colonisation. Numerous monuments constructed in that period, still well preserved, when Salvador was the Capital of the country and home to the Americas’ Portuguese throne.

More than 800 mansions are dating back to the 17th and 18th century in the neighbourhood known as Pelourinho, replete with churches and museums! The city stands out for having the most important maritime port in the Southern Hemisphere in the 18th century.

Beaches

On the bay "Baía de Todos os Santos" the temperature of the water is at average 26 ºC, making it ideal for water sports. Here people practise windsurfing, kitesurfing, and all the Capital’s beaches have an area mostly reserved for surfing. Besides that, sandboarding has also risen to prominence, now well-practised on the dunes.

Main beaches include: Do Farol, Ondina, Rio Vermelho, Amaralina, Jardim de Alá, Armação, Piatã, Itapuã, Stella Maris.

Airport

The city’s main airport is called Aeroporto Internacional Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhães, and it is 30 kilometres from the centre of the city.

Distance from other cities

Recife: 805 kilometres; Aracaju: 356 kilometres; Maceió: 632 kilometres; Brasília: 1,502 kilometres; Belo Horizonte: 1,358 kilometres; Rio de Janeiro: 1,632 kilometres; São Paulo: 1,932 kilometres.
