Lesson 7:
Piauí State
Throughout the region, the climate is predominantly semi-arid, with a long dry period and lots of semi-arid vegetation called coating. These climatic conditions are why its economy is based on subsistence agriculture, cattle farming carried out on huge farms and the extraction of useful substances from different species of palm trees.
Piauí is the State with the smallest stretch of coastline, coming to only about 66 kilometres. This is a small but privileged coast. On the border of Maranhão, to the west lies the Parnaíba river delta, which is the only open sea delta in the Americas. Its ecosystem is similar to that of the Amazon, with large numbers of islands, lakes, and fine sand beaches with dunes and mangroves.
