Lesson 15:
Sergipe Highlights
South Coast, North Coast and the Rota do Sertão (The Road to the Sertão)
The State of Sergipe offers many types of beaches, which is the focus of tourism in the Northeast. However, it also offers some of the most interesting journeys to Brazil’s outback.
South coast
To the south of the State, 25 kilometres from Aracaju, you will find Praia da Caueira beach with over 10 kilometres in length, absolutely packed with mangroves, lakes and even dunes that reach 20 metres in height. Further south, there is Praia de Saco beach, which is considered one of the prettiest in Brazil. It is located in the extreme southern town of Estância, which rather unusually has fresh water from the river and saltwater from the sea.
North coast
On the North coast, you will find Pirambu beach and Santa Isabel Reserve. In Pirambu, you can see all kinds of spectacular nature, from its idyllic beaches to the Roncador Waterfall and Redonda Lake. Here you will also find the first base of Project Tamar, an initiative that protects turtles. Don’t forget to visit the "Pantanal of the Northeast", which stretches over 40 kilometres and is located in Pacatuba. Also on the north coast is the city of Brejo Grande, which is the departure point to travel by boat along the São Francisco estuary.
Rota do Sertão (The Road to the Sertão)
Along this road, you have the chance to observe the stunning nature of Sergipe’s interior and surprisingly, you will arrive at one of the region’s main attractions. The Xingó Canyon, which is the fourth-largest canyon waterway in the world. Its nearest town is Canindé de São Francisco (213 kilometres from Aracaju). Here, visitors will find various alternative activities, such as diving in Velho Chico, numerous trails and an archaeological site whose history you can discover in the Xingó Museum of Archaeology.
