Lesson 5:
Recife
The capital city of Pernambuco State
Today, Recife is the most important city in Brazil’s Northeast. It is a dynamic commercial and industrial centre which make it perfect for travelling for business or pleasure. It has a vast network of hotels, with approximately 11 thousand places to sleep, both in big hotel chains and small independent ones. The area near Praia de Boa Viagem beach offers tourists the best hotels in the city and a view of Recife’s most important beach’s beauty.
Gastronomy
Recife is also one of the most important culinary centres in the country. Typical Pernambuco food was born and raised in the kitchens of small indigenous villages, colonial mansions, slave homes, convents, places where local religions were worshipped and beside the sea. A myriad of original recipes come from other continents and adapted with local ingredients, creating unique flavours and aromas.
Culture
Recife is also a cultural hub and is home to some of the most curious collections, notably the Brennand institute.
Francisco Brennand opened his studio in 1971, in a pottery factory’s ruins from the 20 century. He transformed into a monumental and highly original piece of architecture. His medium is ceramics, and his works range from practical items to monumental sculptures, which decorates this unusual open-air museum.
Ricardo Brennand, Francisco’s cousin, has his own collection; historical and artistic artefacts from diverse places and periods of time. His pieces are displayed in a medieval-style building, which homes to one of the world’s largest armour suits’ collections. Here there are over three thousand pieces of armour, most of which come from Europe and Asia and were made between the 14th and 20th century.
Airport
Recife’s airport is called Aeroporto Internacional Gilberto Freyre; it is 10 kilometres from the city centre and approximately 4 kilometres from the main hotels Praia de Boa Viagem beach.
