Lesson 8:
Ecuador
Capital: Quito
Language: Spanish
Currency: American Dollar
The inspiration for Darwin’s theory of evolution, Ecuador is a beautiful and tropical paradise. Home to some important colonial cities, Ecuador is also surrounded by several active volcanoes. In its capital, Quito, several historic buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the bustling city also has a very lively nightlife.
Surfers will feel well catered for in the quaint and welcoming city of Montañita. It’s also a great place for those looking for some rest and relaxation, away from the usual beach crowds.
Geography
The country is in northwestern South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean on the west. Ecuador also includes the Galápagos Islands in the Pacific, about 1,000 kilometres west of the mainland.
Climate
There is great variety in the climate, largely determined by altitude. It is mild year-round in the mountain valleys, with a humid subtropical climate in coastal areas and rainforest in lowlands. The Pacific coastal area has a tropical climate with a severe rainy season. The Andean highlands’ climate is temperate and relatively dry, and the Amazon basin on the eastern side of the mountains shares the climate of other rainforest zones.
Culture
With its long and rich history, Ecuador is equally inspired by both indigenous customs and European colonial influence. It is particularly well known for its hand-woven tapestries supplied by its local artisans!
Gastronomy
Ecuador is a country distinguished by the culture and hospitality of its inhabitants. But not only that, Ecuadorian gastronomy is full of delicious dishes and is considered one of the best and most characteristic of Latin America.
Gastronomy in the pacific coast of Ecuador is heavily seafood-based. Guanta is a large rodent found in the region, and it is served in a stew with beef, banana, garlic and rice or potatoes. Chontacurro, a dish made with curro worm, is also a favourite in the Amazon region.
