Lesson 14:
Suriname
Capital: Paramaribo
Language: Dutch
Currency: Suriname Dollar
Suriname is a tiny country in northeastern South America, well-known for its Dutch colonial architecture, but absolutely filled with rainforest and a beautiful melting-pot culture! Its capital Paramaribo rises near old Fort Zeelandia, a 17 century trading post surrounded by palm gardens. The city is home to the famous Saint Peter and Paul Basilica, a cathedral dating back to 1885!
Geography
Dependent on its extensive supply of natural resources, such as bauxite, most of the country is still almost entirely covered with gorgeous tropical rainforest. The Atlantic Ocean borders it to the north, French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west, and Brazil to the south!
Climate
With a tropical climate, including two rainy seasons, the average temperature is fair and stays between 21 and 32 ºC throughout the year.
Culture
Despite it being one of the smallest countries in South America, its population is one of the most ethnically diverse in the region! With surprising influence from India, Indonesia and China, Surinamese culture grows increasingly more dynamic while still retaining its indigenous roots, blending Asian, African and European influences.
Gastronomy
Surinamese dishes blend these cultures delightfully in different styles, with dhal lentil stew, roti, grilled flatbread, curry dishes, and gado-gado style Indonesian dish peanut sauce. Fish is also popular as well though not during extreme rainfall!
