Lesson 9:

Falkland Islands

Capital: Stanley, East Falkland?

Language: English

Currency: Pound Sterling

Here, you’ll need a four-wheel drive, and the little planes here bring tourists to penguin-filled islands, surrounded by albatrosses and petrels ready for your binoculars!  Any amount of excursion of the great wilderness here instantly becomes an adventure!

Tourism is entirely directed towards the observation of wildlife, and the islands are an ideal destination to rest from the bustle of large urban centres.

Although the official language is English, most inhabitants also speak Spanish.

Geography

At the end of each day, you can look forward to traditional cosy Falkland Islands hospitality in the hotels, lodges and guesthouses scattered around the islands. An archipelago located in the south of the Atlantic Ocean, on Patagonia’s continental shelf, is where the Malvinas Islands are located, composed of West Malvina, East Malvina, and other 776 smaller islands. The population consists mainly of natives of the islands, most of British descent, but also includes French and Scandinavians. The main islands have mountain ranges that reach 700 metres in height, home to hundreds of birds. Fishing, tourism and sheep farming are the main activities.

Climate

The climate of the islands is oceanic, cold and humid, with a lot of wind. Rain is common for more than half of the year, and snowfall occurs sporadically in any month. Strong winds and cloudy skies are common, however, in the vast majority, the climatic conditions are calm.

Culture

The Falkland Islands culture is synonymous with British influence and also has a large non-native born population.

Gastronomy

Although there is some small Spanish influence from when it used to be under Spanish rules, the cuisine comprises of British characteristics, coming in with beef, lamb, fish, and vegetables. Don’t let that fool you though… there is no missing the cakes and cookies with tea or coffee in the afternoons!

Because it is an island nation, seafood is both plentiful and popular with excellent quality!  Mussels, oysters, scallops, snow crabs… a must-have in many Falkland dishes!  Various fishes are often grilled and served with fritters or steamed vegetables, such as the sea trout or Atlantic rock!
