Lesson 3:

Argentina

Capital: Buenos Aires

Language: Spanish

Currency: Argentinian Peso

Argentina is the second-largest country in South America, behind Brazil. Its capital, Buenos Aires, is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a wide gambit of attractions, from cultural tours ranging from the Obelisk to the La Bombonera stadium, home to the Boca Juniors football team.

Patagonia is another region that is very popular with tourists as well as the city of Ushuaia and the El Calafate region, home to very cold weather and jaw-dropping landscapes, perfect to observe penguins and sea lions. The Glaciares National Park, with its enormous glaciers, is also well worth a visit.

Geography

Located mostly in the southern half of South America, with a mainland area of 2,780,400 kilometres, the country shares the bulk of the Southern Cone with Chile to the west, and is also bordered by Bolivia and Paraguay to the north, Brazil to the northeast, Uruguay and the South Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Drake Passage to the south.

Climate

Argentina has four main climate types: warm, moderate, arid, and cold, all determined by the expanse across latitude, range in altitude, and relief features. Although the most populated areas are generally temperate, there is an exceptional amount of climate diversity ranging from subtropical in the north to polar in the far south. It also includes subtropical rainforests zones, semi-arid and arid regions, temperate plains in the Pampas, and a cold sub-Antarctic region in the south. Mean annual temperatures range from 5 °C in the far south to 25 °C in the north.

Culture

Our parasailers, surfers, and land trekkers love to explore the Argentine culture, which varies widely due to many different ethnic groups and the many different immigrant waves across its history.  Modern Argentina is a blend of Spanish, Italian, and other European backgrounds, a melting pot of “European meets American Indian”. With all this, Argentina developed its own distinct flavour all on its own.  Buenos Aires is the “little Europe” of Argentina due to is gorgeous European architecture blended into a South American setting.

Gastronomy

Want to add a little extra taste to your trip?  It is a must to try chorizo steak, a succulent cut about the size of its plate!  Even more so, try the famous Argentine empanada and the beautiful alfajor!  Carne (meat in Spanish and Portuguese), and more particularly, beef, is Argentina’s speciality with its national dish, the asado (a barbecued meat), reflecting this as it is slow grilled on a large grill packed with steaks!  Ribs, chorizo, molleja (sweetbread), morcilla… steaks, sausages, ribs… everything is packed into this famous delicacy!
