Lesson 15:
São Luís and São José de Ribamar
São Luís, and its neighbouring São José de Ribamar, are both great destinations for any water sports that require wind, such as kitesurfing, thanks to the area’s strong winds. It’s also worth spending a few days sailing on the waves of the Meio, Araçagy, and São Marcos beaches here.
Arari
The large volume of water in the Mearim River, in Arari, is a source of great fun for those who surf on its waves, especially during the first half of the year when the best waves are created by the rainfall. Getting to the edge of the Mearim River involves 20 minutes on a trail through the woods to the Curral da Igreja embarkation point, followed by a 30-minute boat ride, before you reach the incredible river tide phenomenon.
Arriving: Arari is only 155 kilometres from the capital. Leaving from São Luís, you travel by car to Miranda via the BR 135, and then via the BR 222. Buses leave daily from São Luís station bound for the municipality, which sits on the road’s edge.
