Lesson 5:

Unique houses and town

There are two sites in southern Italy famous all over the world for their unique constructing style:

  • The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera
This is the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem.

  • The Trulli of Alberobello
Limestone dwellings found in the southern region of Puglia, are remarkable examples of drywall (mortarless) construction, a prehistoric building technique still in use in this region.
