Serra do Caraça
Located in Santa Barbara and Catas Altas’s welcoming cities’ vicinity, the Natural Park of Serra do Caraça offers stunning lakes, waterfalls, streams, mountains, and fauna and flora particular to the region.
A must for budding ornithologists, this park is home to around 339 species of birds, 71 of which are endemic to the Atlantic, 4 to the Cerrado and 4 to the mountains of southeast Brazil. 66 species of mammals, including the renowned maned wolf, call this region home.
Besides, the Natural Park of Serra do Caraça offers:
- Pico do Sol (peak of the sun) which at 2,072 m is the highest point in the region
- Three types of vegetation – the interior Atlantic Forest, the Cerrado and the Campos de Altitude
- Cultural attractions such as the Historical Centre of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Mãe dos Homens, a fantastic neo-gothic church, the old college building, the cloister, catacomb and the Relógio do Sol e o Calvário
- The park is a part of the Religious Way and the Estrada Real (Royal Road)
